Service

I think it is important to serve as a volunteer in my community and professionally.

Public History Prize 2011

Benjamin Isitt awards the first annual Public History Prize to Concordia University's Ronald Rudin for his book Remembering and Forgetting in Acadie: A Historian's Journey Through Public Memory.

Demonstrating my commitment to public service, I hold office as a city councillor and regional director in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. I am vice-president of the Victoria-Khabarovsk Association, the sister-city organization connecting Canada’s West Coast and Russia’s Far East. I have previously served on the City of Victoria’s Environment and Shoreline Advisory Committee, on the boards of the Fernwood Community Association and University of Victoria Students’ Society, and as policy director for the New Democratic Youth of Canada.

Professionally, I serve as chair of the Public History Prize committee for the Canadian Committee on Public History and as secretary of the Canadian Committee on Labour History, affiliates of the Canadian Historical Association. I have peer reviewed manuscripts for scholarly journals including The Canadian Historical ReviewThe Canadian Journal of Political Science, and BC Studies. I have also collaborated with colleagues in the fields of Pacific and Asian Studies, Co-operative Studies, Community-Based Research, and Housing Policy. This included moderating a Canada-wide Telelearning session on housing policy with fifty academic and non-academic participants, organized by the Canadian Social Economy Hub.
